Lash Extensions: What is the difference between a lash style and a lash technique?
Style:
· a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.
Technique:
· a way of carrying out a particular task, especially the execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.
First let’s start with the different types of lash styles, think of the lash style as the overall look and detail your set will have. To create a certain look we must use a variety of lengths and curls accompanied by specific patterns throughout the length of the lash line. Cat eye, doll eye (open eye), kitten eye, wispy, textured, wet look and strip lash look; these are all examples of lash styles. Now some of these lash styles you can only do with certain techniques to achieve the desired look. So let’s move on to lash techniques.
Lash techniques are the type of set your lash artist can do for you but can be styled a number of different ways. People often use words like: natural, wispy, textured, full or thick (or a combination of these) to describe what they want their lashes to look like, these descriptive words usually indicate the type of technique your lash artist will suggest. The lash technique you chose will usually determine how full or thick your lashes will look by using a variety of diameters and using single lashes or constructing fans. Classic, hybrid, volume and mega volume are currently the most common lashing techniques out there. You can choose the technique you want done (which usually differs in price) and then decide how you want your lashes styled. For example, if you like a very natural look and also like to wear winged eyeliner then you would maybe choose a classic set- cat eye style so they are not too thick and give the illusion of that “winged” look. However, as I previously mentioned, some styles can only be done with certain techniques. If you want a strip lash look then your lash technician will have to do the appropriate technique to achieve that look properly. They can play around with different techniques and/or mix these techniques to get the look you want but the outcome will vary.
Showing your lash artist photos of what you are trying to achieve is always a good idea because it’s easier to understand with a visual reference and make sure you’re both on the same page with the look you want. If somebody asks for lashes that are “natural but full” that could have a variety of outcomes depending on who you ask, so it’s best to reference photos. Or you can use descriptive words and put trust in your lash artist to style your lashes fabulously and if they don’t turn out exactly how you hoped, you can always do a style change on your next fill.
