Experience Vs. Inexperience
That is the question. It may seem like a no-brainer but for a lot of people it’s something they don’t really consider, they just see a “good” or cheaper price and dive right in. For some services that may not be a big deal, but in a lot of cases it is a huge deal or should I say deal-breaker.
An inexperienced technician can take a lot longer to do a service so if you’re patient and their work is good quality then there isn’t really an issue especially because they will usually be charging a bit less if they’ve just started out. If the service is taking a long time and the quality is bad, they most likely are encountering a problem that they aren’t equipped to deal with or they’re just really aren’t cut out to do what they are doing. Yes everyone is human, mistakes are sometimes made and one can only gain experience, through experience. The question is, are you willing to sacrifice the quality of your service for price? Some people are willing to and often times it’s because they don’t have any experience with the service themselves so they don’t have any expectations on the matter, or they are happy with the service being “good enough” for the price they paid.
Again, depending on the service being done, not a big deal. If the service you are getting done is nails or eyelash extensions you might be thinking “what’s the worst that could happen?”, well that is quite a loaded question. There are a number of things that could go terribly wrong (permanent damage or bodily harm) but the likeliness and severity of those things happening are pretty low. With eyelash extensions the worst thing that would likely happen is having a poor job done and they look messy or they’re uncomfortable. Lashes not being bonded properly and having premature fallout, or maybe having your bottom and top lashes glued together so you can’t open your eyes. Not ideal but not the worst thing that could happen. The worst thing you’ll probably encounter getting your nails done is a bad nail job where they are either poorly shaped or polished or they aren’t bonded properly and end up coming off prematurely. However, the likeliness of any of those things happening when somebody is experienced is slim to none.
Then there is services like cosmetic tattooing, which can definitely be an expensive service. Yet people don’t think about the fact that when deciding to go with a cheaper, more inexperienced technician that they could leave with a really, really bad tattoo on their face or worse leave with severe damage or scarring and for what? To save $100 maybe $200 dollars? Often times people end up paying double the price because they first pay for the poorly done job and then again to have it fixed by either another artist or a laser technician. If you do your research and opt for the artist that might be a bit more expensive but has more experience it should be well worth the money.
With that being said, there are technicians out there who have years and years of experience but maybe just never took the care and practice to really master their craft and although they have years under their belt, they’ve been doing poorly done services all those years and on the flip side of that, there are technicians who are fresh in the business and are just naturals at what they do and take the time and care to always do the best service possible for their clients.
For any cosmetic tattooing service I would highly recommend going to someone who has at least a couple years of experience but my best advice for choosing a technician for any service, whether they have lots of experience or a little, is to look at photos of their work or follow recommendations by people who have had work done by them and if someone’s prices are extremely low or their availability is wide open, that is generally a red flag.
