How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?
Lash adhesive bonds for roughly 3-4 weeks, but you'll notice your set thinning out well before that. Most clients lose about half their extensions within 2-3 weeks, which is exactly why fills are scheduled on that timeline. Think of a full set as a 2-3 week look that's topped up regularly, not a one-and-done that lasts a month untouched.
Why They Don't Last Forever
This isn't a flaw in the product. It's just how eyelashes work. Every natural lash goes through its own growth cycle, and it's completely normal to shed 1-4 natural lashes a day. When a natural lash falls out, the extension attached to it goes with it. No adhesive, however good, can outlast the lash it's attached to.
That's the built-in ceiling on any set. Everything else, how you sleep, how you cleanse, what products touch your eye area, determines whether you land near that ceiling or fall well short of it.
What Actually Affects Your Retention
A few habits make the biggest difference between a set that looks full at week three and one that's noticeably sparse by week two:
Keep them dry for the first 24 hours. This gives the adhesive time to fully cure before it's tested by water or steam.
Wash them daily after that. Oil buildup breaks down adhesive faster than almost anything else, and a daily lash-safe cleanse keeps that in check.
Skip mascara (especially waterproof). It can only be removed with oil-based products, and oil is exactly what you don't want near the bond. Not to mention mascara will completely gunk up your beautiful false lashes and not wearing it, is kind of the point of having them.
Hands off. Rubbing, pulling, or picking at extensions pulls out natural lashes before they're ready to shed on their own.
Watch the heat. Ovens, barbecues, and other direct heat sources can loosen the curl or damage the extension itself.
None of these are complicated, but skipping more than one or two at once is usually where clients see their set fall apart faster than expected.
Keeping Your Set Full Between Fills
Because natural lash shedding is constant and invisible, even a perfectly cared-for set will look thinner by week three than it did on day one. That's expected, not a sign anything went wrong. A fill every 2-3 weeks tops up the lashes that have cycled out and keeps your set looking consistently full rather than starting fresh from zero each time.
A full set application takes about 1.5-2.5 hours depending on the style. Fills are quicker since they're only replacing what's shed.
