Should I Get My Eyelash Extensions Wet?
Yes. Washing your lash extensions daily is one of the best things you can do for them. The one exception: give your set a full 24 hours after application before any water touches it, so the adhesive has time to fully cure. After that, daily washing isn't optional maintenance, it's the single best thing you can do for their longevity.
Why Washing Extends Your Retention
It sounds backwards. Wetting something glued to your lashes seems like it should loosen the bond, not protect it. In practice, the opposite is true. Oil is what breaks down lash adhesive, and your skin produces oil, sweat, and sebum every day whether you touch your face or not. Left alone, that buildup collects at the base of your lashes and works against the glue bond from the inside.
A daily wash with a proper oil-free lash cleanser removes that buildup before it has a chance to compromise the bond. That means your extensions stay put longer, not shorter.
How to Wash Your Lash Extensions
Wait a full 24 hours after your appointment before getting your lashes wet.
Apply a small amount of lash-safe cleansing foam (about 2-3 pumps) to the lashes.
Gently work it into the base of the lashes, not the lash length itself, with clean fingers or a soft brush.
Rinse thoroughly, avoiding direct high-pressure water straight at your face.
Repeat daily.
What Happens If You Skip It
Clients who avoid washing their lashes for weeks at a time tend to run into the opposite problem they were trying to prevent. Heavy buildup of oil, makeup, and skin debris coats the natural lash so thoroughly that new adhesive can't bond properly at your next fill, leading to premature shedding despite "protecting" the lashes by keeping them dry.
Unwashed lash lines are also more prone to irritation (also known as blepharitis), since debris and oil buildup along the lash line can lead to clogged glands and general discomfort over time. Another thing that can happen is an over-production of skin mites in your lash line and they love to eat dead skin cells. When you have a large build up in that area they eat away and actually weaken the base of your natural eyelash which will cause premature fallout. This is really only a concern for clients who go weeks without cleansing. It's not a risk if you're washing daily.
Wash Daily, Keep Them Longer
Clean lashes last longer, feel better, and look better. Wait out that first 24 hours, then make washing part of your daily routine the same way you would with skincare.
